What do you do for the Earth? – Report on last week’s green activities

Last week sustainability was in focus as we organized two events on this topic, thanks to our Hungarian volunteer, Máthé Szabina.

Last Wednesday, Szabina gave a presentation about sustainability at the Stop Waste package-free shop in Targu Mures. Both youngs and olds attended the event, which also dealt with the generation gap in attitudes towards sustainability.

In the first part of her presentation, Szabina talked about such serious topics as climate anxiety, that is how news about climate change affects our mental and spiritual health. She also gave us an insight into the background of green thinking.

Additionally, we learned the difference between impulse and conscious buying, and why it is important to improve our awareness on this topic. Furthermore, we were given a short guide to navigate the maze of consumer goods and to avoid buying unnecessary items.

Last but not least, we learned about ecopsychology, a way for everyone to strengthen their connection with nature.

In the second part, Szabina presented simple, but useful practices and tools that can help us reduce the amount of waste in our everyday life. She illustrated her talk with her personal items: water bottle, reusable coffee cup and shopping bags are important parts of her everyday belongings.

The audience was of course invited to ask questions, so by the end of the presentation an interesting discussion took place, when everyone could share their experiences and attempts to live a more eco-friendly and sustainable life.

Our workshop in Cristuru Secuiesc on Thursday focused on natural cosmetics.

During the workshop we made our own lip balm and cream deodorant, which we personalised with different essential oils. Meanwhile, Szabina explained why each ingredient is necessary and how it affects our body. By the end of the event everyone was satisfied because they gained a lot of experience and had their own handmade cosmetics.
