Székelyudvarhely is the second most important city of Harghita´s county and therefore it is one of the historical centers of Székely Land.
- Márton Áron Square
“Márton Áron Square” is the Székelyudvarhely’s central square, and generally festivals and political events take place in there. Márton Áron, who give the name to this square, was a bishop and an historical symbol of the revolution against communism.
While entering in the square, you meet a big statue of a soldier. Fun fact: the sculpture was originally made of wood. Just during the WW I, in order to raise funds to support the army, some people were standing under the statue, collecting donations and, as a symbolic sign, every donor hammed in a metal nail on the statue. At one point the statue happened to be completely covered with nails, so it was decided to replace the old wooden sculpture with a new metal one.
- Haáz Rezső Museum
The “Haáz Rezső Museum” is one of the eldest museum of ethnography, local history, art and natural science of the Odorheiu Region. The museum’s seat is the Haberstumpf cottage. It was built in 1900 and it was used by the Haberstumpf family as a summer cottage. Its style differs from the style of other buildings in the town, it reflects the German eclecticism.
Since exhibitions changes from time to time, we recommend to check it out on their website. You find there also the opening times and ticket’s prices.

- The Székelyudvarhely’s churches
The oldest building in Odorheiu municipality is from the 14th century and is the “Jézus Szíve” chapel, that was recently renovated. In town the eldest structure is the Franciscan Christian church, inside it has a baroque style and outside is interesting to see a monument that commemorates the first Hungarian revolution (1956) against the communist regime. Also, there are other churches such as Orthodox, Unitarian and Catholic. An interesting fact: The “Szent Miklós” Church is located in the highest point of the city. Both Protestants and Catholics were claiming for its property – at the end it became a catholic church.. The protestant church, located near the town hall, was built after it.
