JULI & VAL AROUND:

SZÉKELYKERESZTÚR

We invite you to discover the town through our favorite spots!

  • The city

The town of Székelykeresztúr belongs to the Harghita region, in Szeklerland. The population is around 10,000 people, the majority has Hungarian origin and the predominant language is Hungarian. “Piața Libertății” is the main street and is located in the center. This village is surrounded by lakes, forests, a natural spa with mineral water and many other amazing places to visit.

There are 4 churches: Protestant, Catholic, Unitarian and an Ortodox. The unitarian church is worth visiting because it has its own particular style related with the local culture. In the center there is a library where you can also find English books and nearby there is the Museum of history and art “Molnár István Muzeum”. In addition, there are a lot of shops where you can make daily purchases, playgrounds for children and parks to do physical activity. Our advice for dinner is “Küküllő restaurant”.

About the nightlife, there are pubs where you can dance and many places where you can eat traditional food and enjoy a cold beer as for example “Summer garden”. Maybe you will find the latin dances group in there, because from time to time they go for a beer after the  dancing class. If you want to drink a coffee and read a book we recommend to sit at the tables outside “Bistro” where the waiters are kind and they can speak English. To just relax, we advise you to go outside the Orthodox church, where there is the fountain. You can sit on a bench under the trees and listen to the life flowing and birds singing.

In the case you need an exchange there are many offices in the center, and also two banks (OTP and Transylvania´s bank).

To sleep there are many motels, the “Petőfi Motel” on the main street is recommended for its location, quality and price.

If you want to try something different you can ask for the fresh milk machine, just do not forget to take a bottle to collect some super fresh milk! Also, you can enjoy local products such as those offered by the Keresztúri dairy factory: their products can be found in some small shops too, do not miss the opportunity to taste them!!

  • Petőfi-emlékszoba / Petőfi park

This park, situated in the city, is a commemorative space for Sándor Petőfi, hungarian poet and liberal revolutionary. The legend says that the writer spent his last night in this place, under the tree that nowadays is fenced and covered by commemorative hungarian flags. The day after, Petofi died fighting for the freedom of Hungary in a battle near Sighisoara. Further, he ate his last meal in the house next to the park with the rich family who was living in there. The park itself is a lovely place, an oasis of peace where history continues to resound soaked in the countryside.

  • Jèzuskiáltó / “Cry of Jesus” (2 km)

Climb the hill where the cross is and meet the stunning view of Cristuru Secuiesc from above! The path is easy to follow and suitable also for children. For an unforgettable adventure start your hike one hour before the sunset!

Once you reach the cross is highly recommended to carry on with your hike until you can see the Rugonfalvi’s lake. There is no footpath to get there but it is not complicated and you can easily follow our map.

TIP: wear long trousers since the grass can be pretty tall.

Jézuskiáltó literally means the “Cry of Jesus” and a local legend says that the locals defeated the Tatars on the hill. Since the place has a strong echo, locals screamed the name of Jesus, and the Tartars, hearing the terrifying sounds, believed they would face a large army, which they couldn’t hope to defeat. Anyway there are many versions of this story: another says that, while they were screaming, the earth opened and the Tatars were falling inside the fault.

  • Sóskút fürdő / Saltwater bath (3 km)

Very close outside the regional city of Cristuru Secuiesc is a peri-urban forest and a natural spa. To arrive at this magnificent place you need to take “Strada Sóskút”. This route first offers a tour of the herbal variety, then crosses the forest, which is full of arboreal vegetation, and reach the rustic and natural spa.

The spa is 100% natural and is composed of extremely salty water, which are levels than those in the Black Sea. The richness of minerals in this pools depends on the concentration of salts in the soil, peculiarity of the entire region, and has a red-brown color due to the high iron content. There is a slight smell of sulfur in the air, which characterizes this unique place.

The structure is completely wooden made and it has four pools and changing rooms. Do not miss a relaxing bath in this spectacular mineral water, on the sunny hills of the Transylvanian Plateau. It is nice to go walking or cycling from the city center through the asphalt street, enjoying the forest microclimate and take a bath rejuvenating your skin and boosting your energy.

ATTENTION!

Pay attention there, as in the area have been spotted bears many times.

  • Rugonfalvi Halastó / Rugonfalvi lake (5,5 km)

Rugonfalvi, a village next to Cristuru, keeps a marvellous secret that i am going to reveal. Take your bike and ride until the Rugonfalvi’s lake. Every season, every time is definitely worthy to go there: when the weather is warm, wear your favorite bikini, go to swim, dive from the springboards and enjoy a beer under the sun. In winter, when the weather is cold enough, the lake freezes and you can go for an ice-skate on the frozen lake.

Hunger shows up? No worries, just order something at the restaurant and enjoy your meal on the lakeside terrace.

In other words be sure you won’t miss it out.

  • Keresztúri halastó / Cristuru Secuiesc’s lake (4.5 km)

Perfect place to rest and relax surrounded by nature, with a spectacular view of the lake.

Sometimes there are fishermen although it is not highly recommended to fish in this lake because there is a lot of vegetation that makes the sport difficult. We recommend riding the bike until there since it is not very close, it is also a good opportunity to do some sport, breathe fresh air and spot the beautiful landscape.
